COVID-19 has been devastating to many of us. Billions of people have been laid off in the US resulting in not only loss of income but loss of identity. One of those billions of people is me.
I'm struggling. Like many of you, I've been searching on LinkedIn Jobs, Glassdoor, Indeed and other job posting sites. What I'm finding is many jobs in my field at my level require skills I don't have. Though I've got a lot of good experience and skills, I lack some current technical skills that are in demand now. Gotta tell you, it's a little soul crushing.
What am I doing? I'm skilling up! There are many online training opportunities available now at reduced or no cost. But be careful. It's not cheap so choosing the one right for you is critical. Trust me, I've had personal experience dealing with substandard programs. Here are a few things I wish I had done.
7 Tip to Select the Best Training/Certification Programs
- Review all the benefits, tools and access available in the program and does it address your learning needs. Do they have live classes for ALL their classes in the program or just a few?
- Confirm with the program all the benefits you believe you will receive. What your ideas of what they're offering may differ from theirs.
- Find data into whether you industry recognizes and values the program's certificate.
- Make sure their content is current and relevant to your desired industry or job.
- Are the tools used in the program currently being used in your desired job? Compare tools offered to current job listing skill requirements.
- Make sure you visit review websites like Trustpilot and Quora.
- Don't be fooled by the numbers of good ratings.Take a look at their 1 star reviews and search for reviews with detailed and specific service complaints. Then ask yourself if you can live with each limitation or issue. Changes in service may have resulted in issues.
