Skilling Up!

Online Learning

COVID-19 has been devastating to many of us. Billions of people have been laid off in the US resulting in not only loss of income but loss of identity. One of those billions of people is me.

I'm struggling. Like many of you, I've been searching on LinkedIn Jobs, Glassdoor, Indeed and other job posting sites. What I'm finding is many jobs in my field at my level require skills I don't have. Though I've got a lot of good experience and skills, I lack some current technical skills that are in demand now. Gotta tell you, it's a little soul crushing.

What am I doing? I'm skilling up! There are many online training opportunities available now at reduced or no cost. But be careful. It's not cheap so choosing the one right for you is critical. Trust me, I've had personal experience dealing with substandard programs. Here are a few things I wish I had done.

7 Tip to Select the Best Training/Certification Programs

  • Review all the benefits, tools and access available in the program and does it address your learning needs. Do they have live classes for ALL their classes in the program or just a few?
  • Confirm with the program all the benefits you believe you will receive. What your ideas of what they're offering may differ from theirs.
  • Find data into whether you industry recognizes and values the program's certificate.
  • Make sure their content is current and relevant to your desired industry or job.
  • Are the tools used in the program currently being used in your desired job? Compare tools offered to current job listing skill requirements.
  • Don't be fooled by the numbers of good ratings.Take a look at their 1 star reviews and search for reviews with detailed and specific service complaints. Then ask yourself if you can live with each limitation or issue. Changes in service may have resulted in issues.

Meditation: I finally got it!

Many have touted the benefits of meditation. Seems like every thought leader, business leader and celebrity is expressing how life changing the practice is. If Oprah's doing it, I want to at least try. So I downloaded all the apps and read books about trying to harness the power for myself.  No matter how I tried, it just didn't work. My mind would race and I'd go through my to-do list, what I fought about with my husband, work stuff, why my son wasn't getting his work done and what I was going to make for dinner, among other things. I couldn't get that all to stop. I just couldn't get quite. I just thought I couldn't do it and I wasn't going to be one of those people. I was wrong. These are the methods I used to find success with meditations: Deep Breathes - Start with some deep cleansing breaths. Chant -   A recently acquired coach suggested I use a chant or word to focus. That word was "shrim" . You repeat it any way you want; slow or fast,

Menopause and Me

I'm so incredibly jealous of those who have discovered their passion and are pursuing their dreams. I've been hearing for many years that to be truly successful, I needed to do that. So I sat down to explore and discovered I had no idea what the hell that meant. Being a wife, mother and working girl, didn't leave much time for personal fulfillment. This is my journey to discovering self-care, career fulfillment and personal growth, not a small feat for a 53 year old Korean-American woman. Menopause and Why I Hate It Let's start with the fact I HATE menopause. It makes me feel old. We have to endure these crazy menopause symptoms like our brains not working (memory loss, brain fog), insomnia, fatigue, mood swings, hot flashes and night sweats, weight gain, frequent urination and general decline of our physical bodies. I didn't even know menopause hair loss was a thing! If that wasn't bad enough, according to Newsweek's KASHMIRA GANDER , researchers have foun
